Tomato Rice | Thakkali Sadam with step-by-step pictures and recipe. Tomato Rice is one of the simplest, fuss-free, rice varieties that I cook very often at home. This Rice variety is mainly from the South region where they make this on a regular basis. It is also known as Thakkali Sadam or Tomato Bhaat, basically, every region has a unique name. However, the recipes also differ a bit from region to region.
Main Ingredients for Thakkali Sadam
Tomatoes– This is the key ingredient in this recipe.
Basmati Rice – everybody prefers different rice to use. Mainly in my house, whenever I prepare any rice dish, it has to be basmati rice. But when I was in Bangalore for a year, I did try different rice like Sona Masoori and Pooni rice. So, basically, it is your choice.
Curry leaves, Onions, green chilies are the other ingredients you will need for this recipe.

Ingredients
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 to matoes finely chopped
- 2 cup cooked Basmati Rice
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- a handful of curry leaves
- 1 green chili finely chopped
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander and cumin powder
- salt as per taste
- 1 tbsp cooking oil
- a handful of finely chopped coriander leaves.
Instructions
- Firstly, chop onion and tomatoes and keep it aside, and assemble all the ingredients.
- Now, heat oil in a pan and add urad dal, once it starts to crackle and turns light brown in color add mustard seeds and allow it to crackle.
- Add green chilies and curry leaves in that pan.
- Now add finely chopped onions in the pan and allow it to cook for 2 minutes till they turn brown and shrink.
- Time to add tomatoes in the pan and cook for 1 minute before adding in the spices.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt, and coriander powder and mix everything well till tomatoes are cooked and mushy. This will take around 2 minutes.
- Finally, add cooked rice and mix everything well till the spices are mixed well.
- Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and serve it hot.

Tips and Notes
- It is better to use cooked rice for this recipe or leftover rice as this will cook faster and taste better.
- However, you can also cook this together in one pot or rice cooker.
- Adjust the spiciness as per your taste.
Serving Suggestions
Tomato rice will taste good with Cucumber Raita or Palak Raita. Also, some papads, pickles, and plain curd will go well with this Tomato Bhaat.
