Tips and important points

  • Most importantly, to make this recipe, you need to boil and cook chana dal properly.
  • I have boiled chana dal on the stovetop, you can however boil them in a pressure pan till just 1 whistle.
  • If you overcook chana dal in this recipe, then it will be mushy and will spoil the taste.
  • Some may not be using jaggery and tamarind in Sundal recipes, however, the South Indian recipe book that I refer, recommends to use it for an authentic taste. You may however omit using it and cook it very simply.
  • Serve this with freshly grated coconut as this will give the best taste.
