Samo Upma – Navratri | Shravan | Fasting | One Pot Vegan Recipe

Samo Upma also is known as Vegan Barnyard Millet Savoury Porridge is usually made during  Navratri and Shravan as a fasting recipe. It is a very popular fasting breakfast recipe. This One-pot Vrat / Fasting recipe makes for a smart choice during fasting as it is gluten-free, vegan, healthy and a very light option to binge on. It hardly takes 15 minutes to cook and it is total fuss-free. Even beginners or bachelors can opt for this recipe. You just need to follow the detailed fasting recipe of Samo Upma.

Sama khichdi, Vrat ka pulao, Bhagar Upma, or Samvat are the few names it is known as. It is usually served with yogurt or peanut raita, and a few also love to have it with Vrat ki kadhi.

Samo Upma makes a delicious fasting breakfast recipe suitable for men and women who observe Sharavan Somvar also called Shravan Mondays to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings. Samo Upma

Recipe of Samor Upma | Vegan Barnyard Millet Savory Porridge

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups Barnyard millet/ Samo
1/2 cup Peanuts
A handful of Cashew nuts
1 tbsp Yogurt (optional)
3 Cups Warm water
1 big Green chili
1 tsp Cumin seeds (jeera)
A handful of Curry leaves
Pinch of Sugar
1 tsp Lemon juice
1 tbsp Groundnut oil/ Sunflower oil
Rock Salt/ Salt as per taste

Method:

1. Take 1 1/2 cups of Samo | Barnyard Millet in a bowl and wash it with water at least 3 times.

2. Soak it for 10 minutes cooking.

3. Keep peanuts, cashew nuts, green chili, curry leaves, and cumin seeds ready in a plate before you start to cook.

4. Heat oil in a pan and once it’s hot add cashew nuts and fry them till golden brown.

5. Remove on a plate and now add peanuts and fry them till golden brown in color on a medium flame.

6. If you fry them on a high flame then it will not be crunchy. Remove it on a plate and keep it aside.

7. Now add cumin seeds, once they start crackling add curry leaves and green chili in it.

8. Saute it for 4-5 seconds and add Samo in it. Add 2 cups of water in it and let it cook for 5 minutes stirring it in between.

9. If you do not stir it often then the Samo will stick at the bottom and burn.

10. At this point add curd (if you are using) and the rest of the water and let Samo cook again till 5 minutes.

11. Add a few peanuts, salt, sugar, and lemon juice in it.

12. Once all the liquid is absorbed switch off the flame and remove Samo in a serving bowl.

13. Garnish with fried peanuts, cashew nuts, and serve it hot.
