Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup of Chana Dal
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds | rai
  • few curry leaves
  • 2-3 dry red chilies
  • 1 tsp jaggery powder
  • 1 tsp tamarind extract
  • salt as per taste
  • 1 tbsp fresh grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil coconut or sunflower oil

Instructions
 

  • First;y, wash chana dal in water for 2-3 times and soak it in water for an hour.
  • Now take 3 cups of water in a pan and heat it and bring it to boil. Now add chana dal in boiling water and also add salt as per taste.
  • Cook the chana dal in boiling water on a medium flame for 8-9 minutes and stir in between.
  • You will see water boiling and become foamy and frothy. At this point reduce the flame and cook for another 4-5 minutes till chana dal is soft. Switch off the flame and drain all the water and keep the chana dal aside on a plate.
  • Now heat oil in a Kadai and add urad dal and mustard seeds|rai in the oil.
  • Once it starts to crackle and turns brown add dry red chilies and curry leaves in it.
  • Now add cooked chana dal, jaggery, tamarind, salt, and mix everything well so that the spices are well combined with the dal.
  • Finally, garnish it with grated coconut and serve it hot.

Step-by-Step Recipe of Chana Dal Sundal

1. Firstly, wash chana dal in water for 2-3 times and soak it in water for an hour.

2. Now take 3 cups of water in a pan and heat it and bring it to boil. Now add chana dal in boiling water and also add salt as per taste.

3. Cook the chana dal in boiling water on a medium flame for 8-9 minutes and stir in between.

Tips and important points

  • Most importantly, to make this recipe, you need to boil and cook chana dal properly.
  • I have boiled chana dal on the stovetop, you can however boil them in a pressure pan till just 1 whistle.
  • If you overcook chana dal in this recipe, then it will be mushy and will spoil the taste.
  • Some may not be using jaggery and tamarind in Sundal recipes, however, the South Indian recipe book that I refer, recommends to use it for an authentic taste. You may however omit using it and cook it very simple.
  • Serve this with freshly grated coconut as this will give the best taste.
